From trace elements in alkaline batteries to micronutrients for agriculture – Berner and Tracegrow create a new partnership
Berner and Tracegrow, a cleantech company producing micronutrients for agriculture, have agreed on a collaboration in the sales and distribution of circular economy micronutrients in Finland. The shared goal of the two companies is to bring new circular economy solutions to farmers.
Tracegrow Ltd is the first and only company in the world to develop a unique technology to convert the trace elements contained in alkaline batteries into clean micronutrients to be used in farming. Zinc and manganese are extracted from the batteries and processed into micronutrients. The final product is a high-quality micronutrient for farming.
“Our goal is to develop sustainable agriculture together with the best partners available. To produce high yields, plants need a wide and balanced range of micronutrients. Instead of mining these from the soil, this technology enables the circulation of micronutrients from batteries, which is a much more ecologically friendly option,” says Kalle Erkkola, Head of Department at Farmer’s Berner.
“We have come up with a technology that enables us to produce micronutrients from used alkaline batteries in full compliance with the strictest purity criteria for fetilisers. The distribution agreement with Berner is the first of its kind. Thanks to the combination of their expertise and efficient sales organisation, we are now able to reach farmers more effectively,” says Tatu Leppänen, CEO for Tracegrow.
Tracegrow has worked on the pioneering technology for several years and the company’s first production plant opened in Kärsämäki in June 2018. The micronutrients are produced at the Kärsämäki facility, where patented technology is applied to reclaim nutrients useful for plants and the potentially harmful substances are efficiently purified. The products are packaged for distribution at Berner’s Heinävesi factories.
Tracegrow is a member of the Cleantech Finland network and was shortlisted for the Nordic Council Environment Prize 2017.
Berner is a leading actor in agricultural trade in Finland, Sweden and the Baltic countries. In Finland, Berner serves farmers in partnership with Avena Nordic Grain Oy through the Farmer’s Avena Berner service concept.
